Term 5 Week 4

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

This week our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists have been revisiting the work of Henri Matisse, building on our collage work from last term. This time, we looked in particular at ‘La Gerbe’ (see below). We talked again about Matisse’s use of organic shapes cut from paper, and used scissors to create some of our own. We arranged the shapes over a balloon, using cellulose adhesive to build up the layers. When they’ve completely dried we’ll remove the balloon and be left with a Matisse-inspired bowl sculpture!

Magenta & Violet Class

The year 3 and 4 artists worked with clay this week. We looked at examples of ancient Greek and Roman theatre masks (see photos), as well as more modern masks from Venice and Mexico. We are using these as inspiration for our own mask sculptures. We sketched out the proportions of a face in our sketchbooks, then started by creating a wide pinch pot, forming it into the shape of a face. We’ll be painting designs on to them one they’re fully dry.

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 classes have been looking at the work of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti (see photos). We took turns to sketch our partners modeling different poses, using simple stick figures to emulate Giacometti’s elongated figures. We then used lolly sticks and glue guns to form our chosen poses, before starting to cover them in Modroc. We’ll continue with this stage next week.

Term 5 Week 3

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

This week our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists learnt some clay modelling techniques! We practised rolling spheres and cylinders, then had a go at pinch pots and coil pots. We learnt how to join two pieces of clay together successfully, and how to apply water to avoid the clay cracking. We then used some of these skills to create a tortoise!

Our year 3 and 4 artists finished off their tissue paper lanterns this week! We were then challenged to create an abstract sculpture using only lolly sticks and glue guns. We made some amazing creations!

Our year 5 and 6 artists were also busy with glue guns this week! Their challenge was to create a sculpture using only glue guns and crayons. The end results were really effective! We then practised some techniques for working with clay.

Term 5 Week 2

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

This week, the reception, year 1 and year 2 classes investigated the work of British sculptor and textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood. We created a hanging sculpture in response to his work, using cool melt glue guns to fix lolly sticks together to form a design. We added patterns to the lolly sticks using pens, then wove lengths of wool through the structure. Our pieces were very effective!

The year 3 and 4 artists worked on their tissue paper lanterns. We peeled the now dry tissue paper and PVA layers from the backing plastic and bent it round to form a cylinder, using a glue gun to fix it in place. We experimented with different techniques for altering the appearance of the cylinder using a paper version, then set to work on our lanterns to add interesting details such as windows and crenellations. We put the finishing touches on using pearlescent acrylic paint.

Emerald Class

The year 5 and 6 artists continued with their willow weaving sculptures. We added wet strength tissue paper to the willow forms, using cellulose adhesive to fix it in place. We then added accents of coloured tissue paper to catch the light when they’re displayed.

Bronze Arts Award- Week 1

Indigo class have started working towards their Bronze Arts Award! This is an accredited award endorsed by Trinity College, London, and is the equivalent of a D-G grade GCSE. The Bronze award is spit into four sections, the first of which involves having a go at different kinds of art. We’ll be trying out some sculpture projects over the course of the half term, and the students will be keeping a record in their log books.

This week, we talked through the arts logs to familiarise ourselves with the structure of the award. We then worked on creating a lantern using tissue paper. We layered the tissue paper up using plenty of PVA glue, adding wires to act as feet once the lanterns are dry. We also tried out some techniques to manipulate a cardboard cylinder, using scissors to add interesting details. We’ll use similar techniques on our lanterns.

Term 5 Week 1- Sculpture

Term 5 is all about sculpture! We’ll be working with a range of media over the course of the term to create some exciting three-dimensional artwork.

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

Our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists worked on some paper sculptures, building on their papercrafting skills from last term. We experimented with building a mini cityscape, forming a range of heights and widths to add interest to our work. We also had a go at making animal forms using only newspaper, masking tape and parcel tape.

Our year 3 and 4 artists started a two week project, creating lanterns with tissue paper and PVA glue. We tore strips of tissue paper and glued them to a plastic base, building up the layers with plenty of glue. We added three pieces of wire to act as feet for the lantern. On the last layer we added touches of glitter for a bit of extra sparkle!

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists started a two week willow sculpture project. We formed designs from willow withies, using masking tape to hold the lengths in place. We took advantage of the warm weather to work outside, hanging our sculptures in the trees to support them while we worked on them.

Term 4 Week 6- Decoupage

This week, all of our classes had a go at decoupage. This form of collage uses very thin types of paper such as tissue paper and newsprint to decorate an object. Each student had the initial of their name made from papier mache. Some of us used a special kind of decoupage paper called Decopatch, whilst others used regular tissue paper or cut pieces from comics. The results were great!

Arts Award Explore

This week our Arts Award students joined forces to share their work with each other! The presenting element forms part of the award at both Discover and Explore levels. Our two Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students have been working towards their Discover awards whilst volunteering with Amber class, and our Explore candidates joined them to discuss their work. They took turns to explain the processes they went through to complete their final projects, used post-it notes to record their thoughts about each other’s work.

Term 4 Week 5- Natural Materials and Tissue Paper Collages

Amber & Turquoise Class

Our Reception, year 1 and year 2 artists made the most of the sunny weather to gather some natural materials for our tree collages this week. We drew around our hands and cut them out to make the trunk and branches of our trees, and then added a combination of natural materials and patterned paper to create the foliage.

Magenta & Violet Class

The year 3 and 4 artists grouted their mosaic coasters this week. They looked great! We’ll give them a final polish when the grout is fully dry. We also made stained glass effect collages by layering tissue paper onto a piece of acetate. We added silhouetted details using black card. The images looked really effective against the window with the light shining through them.

Maroon & Emerald Class

The year 5 and 6 artists also grouted their coasters. They did a great job! We then had a go at some 3D collage techniques, creating relief sculptures using strips of paper. The students came up with some really creative ways to manipulate the paper to make interesting structures.

Arts Award Explore

Indigo class finished off their personal projects this week. We had a relief sculpture of a coastline made from papier mâché and modroc, a collaged mood board with images collected from magazines, and an acrylic portrait on canvas. We will be reflecting on our work and sharing it with another group next week, which is an important part of the Arts Award process.
