This week, each class unraveled their tie dyed t-shirts! It was really exciting to see how they’d turned out, and we think they look fantastic! It was a good opportunity to take some end of year class photos (courtesy of Nigel at ACS Photography- thank you!) We were missing quite a few of our artists due to the Christmas holidays- also, a special mention to Teal class and Sapphire class, who didn’t do tie dyeing as they were busy working on different aspects of their Arts Award courses and so Ellie didn’t think to take a photo!

This week, we had a go at tie dyeing! Each student produced a colourful t-shirt using fabric dyes. We first watched a video demonstrating some ways by which different patterns can be achieved. We then used elastic bands to tie the t-shirts in the desired way before adding dye. The t-shirts have to sit for 6-8 hours before being rinsed, and we will then undo them next week to see what our creations look like!

This week each class had a go at wet felting! We used merino wool carding in a variety of colours to lay out a design onto a bamboo mat. We laid mesh over the top, dampened it down with warm, soapy water, then rubbed and rolled it in different ways to allow the wool to felt together. It was quite a tiring process but we ended up with some lovely handmade felt pieces!

Our reception to year 6 artists have all been having a go at some weaving this week! We constructed cardboard looms, then chose different coloured wool to weave onto them. It was fiddly work but everyone got the hang of it!

Meanwhile, our Key Stage 3 and 4 artists have been continuing with their Batik project, working with Clare from Paisley Art. They drew their designs from last week onto fabric, then used a tjanting tool to trace over their images with molten wax. They practised using tie dye inks to bring the design to life, ready to complete their pieces next week.

 

 

 

 

 

Maroon & Turquoise Class

This week, our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists have been creating sock caterpillars! We chose which pattern we’d like to do, then stuffed the sock in sections using wadding. We added googly eyes and used pipe cleaners to make antennae. We then drew a portrait of our caterpillar and included some information about it.

 

Amber, Magenta & Violet Class

Our year 3 and 4 artists made sock bunnies! We filled the socks with rice, then toed them off using string. We added embellishments including googly eyes, ribbons and tails. The results looked very cute!

 

Jade & Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists made glove aliens! We stuffed the gloves with wadding, then sewed up the gap with a needle and thread. We then added embellishments. We got some very creative results!

 

Cyan & Indigo Class

Our year 7-11 classes started a three week Batik project run by visiting artist Clare Turner this week! They started by drawing some natural forms from still life, then developed these into designs ready to work on in molten wax next week. We’re looking forward to seeing the results!

This week our artists were inspired by the experimental work of contemporary textiles artist Lynne Chapman. You can find Lynne’s lovely work on her website here.

Maroon & Turquoise Class 

Our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists looked at examples of Lynne’s experimental textiles work. We discussed the media she used, including cold tea bags! We had a go at using tea bags in our own work to create background patterns onto fabric. We then used Brusho paints to add other interesting areas of colour. 

 

Amber, Magenta & Violet Class

Our year 3 and 4 artists looked at examples of Lynne’s work inspired by petroglyphs. We talked about symbols and language, and recorded some examples of petroglyphs used in Native American artwork in our sketchbooks. We then created a design onto fabric inspired by these symbols, using oil pastel and Brusho.

 

Jade & Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists took their inspiration from Lynne’s work based on maps. We looked at examples of both old and more contemporary maps, and discussed the similar symbols we could see in each. We used these symbols when inventing maps of our own fantasy landscapes, and drew them onto fabric using pencils and Brusho.
