Term 6 Week 3

This week, all of our students have been working on a collective project inspired by the architectural artwork of Austrian-born New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We investigated some of his colourful painted buildings (see below), then began creating our own mini houses inspired by his work, using cardboard boxes and offcuts. Our individual houses will then come together to create one big building!

Our studio assistant, William the basset hound, also made an appearance this week- you can spot him in some of the photos!

Cyan Class- Bronze Arts Award

Cyan class have been researching American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly for part C of the Bronze Arts Award. We made some sculptures of our own inspired by his work. We used painted acetate sheets, which we cut into different shapes and threaded onto skewers. We got some beautiful results!

You can find out about Chihuly’s work on his website.

Term 6 Week 2

Amber & Turquoise Class

Our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists worked on their collaborative Chihuly inspired sculpture this week. We cut the painted plastic bottles into spirals, then each student used a glue gun to fix their bottle onto a board. We’ll be hanging it from the ceiling for our exhibition on 8th July!

We also watched a video about Chihuly’s expressive drawing style, for which he used up to 50 pencils at once, and then had a go ourselves. You can watch the video below.

Magenta & Violet Class

Our year 3 and 4 artists finished off their Chihuly inspired bowls this week. We used a heat gun to melt the plastic into wavy shapes, emulating Chihuly’s glass bowl series. It was really fun to watch the plastic start to change form- we never quite knew what it was going to do so every bowl was a surprise!

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists continued with their Chihuly inspired sculptures. We cut the painted acetate sheets we prepared last week into different shapes, then threaded them onto a skewer. It was a very effective process- we got some beautiful results!

Maroon Class

We had a visit from illustrator Craig Pattrick this week! Craig showed us lots of his development sketches and talked about the importance of perseverance when designing new characters. He also showed us some of his fantastic plasticine sculptures, and we had a go at making a Minion!

You can find out about Craig and his work on his website.

Term 6 Week 1

We were excited to start the new term this week! We’ll be focusing on sculpture for the next few weeks, investigating various artists and using a variety of materials.

Our artist inspiration this week is American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. Each class has been investigating his work and are producing their own artwork inspired by what we’ve seen.

You can find out more about Chihuly on his website, here.

Amber & Turquoise Class

Our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists looked at Chihuly’s large scale installations. We are going to work on a collaborative sculpture, using plastic bottles to emulate the look of the glass in Chihuly’s designs. Each artist painted a bottle which we will transform into spirals next week- Amber class mixed reds and yellows, and Turquoise used yellows and blues.

Magenta & Violet Class

Our year 3 and 4 artists looked at examples of Chihuly’s Macchia and Persians series. We are using plastic plates to create our own versions of Chihuly’s colourful asymmetric bowls. This week we used sharpies to draw patterns onto the bowls; next week we’ll be using heat to alter their shape!

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists investigated Chihuly’s Rotolo series, which features long, twisted glass forms. This week we painted sheets of acetate using acrylic paint, emulating the coloured glass in Chihuly’s work. Next week we’ll be cutting and arranging the acetate to create sculptures inspired by the Rotolo artwork.

Term 1 Week 6

This week, each class had a go at tie dyeing t-shirts! We’re looking forward to untying them next week to see the results. We also completed our collaborative mixed media project based on textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood’s work. Each group added their painted MDF strips to the sculpture, then wove various wools and yarns between the pieces.

Summer Workshops

We had a lovely few days of workshops! It was great to see some of our current term time students, plus some artists who have previously attended workshops. It was also fantastic to meet lots of new creative youngsters!

Here’s what we’ve been up to- please click on a photo to enlarge.

Paper Rolling Sculptures

We made tubes from lots of different kinds of paper, including some that we had decorated ourselves. We then used cool melt glue guns to construct gravity-defying abstract sculptures. We got some brilliant results!

Face and Body Painting with Rose Croft

Professional artist Rose showed us a range of painting techniques, using ourselves as canvases! We learned how to apply the paint using sponges and brushes to recreate some of Rose’s designs (and to make up some of our own!)

Brilliant Buttons

We made a variety of different creations using lots and lots of buttons, including tree collages, picture frames and caterpillars!

Wigwam Weaving

We used willow withies to create mini wigwams, and then wove different kinds of wool and yarn onto them. We finished them off by adding feathers. We also worked as a group to weave lengths of fabric onto a large scale structure. This workshop was quite fiddly- all of our artists showed great perseverance!

Collage Creatures

We investigated the fabulous collage work of San Francisco-based artist Denise Fiedler. We learned how to create a dog collage using paper from an old book, and then had a go at assembling our own animal characters based on her work- we had dogs, cats, birds, horses and even unicorns!

Well done to all of our workshop artists- see you again soon!

Term 6 Week 5

This week, each student produced a piece of artwork that combined drawing and sculpture. We made a whole flock of birds, which will be on display at our summer exhibition at the weekend.

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise

Our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists started by producing some mixed media studies of feathers. We experimented with combining different media and techniques to create a page full of different colours and textures. We then used our work as collage material to create our bird sculptures!

Magenta & Violet

Our year 3 and 4 artists produced a study of a peacock feather to add to their collection of feather drawings from last week. We then used our drawings as collage for our birds.

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 students also created beautiful birds!

Bronze Arts Award- Week 6

Indigo class finished off their Alberto Giacometti-inspired figure sculptures this week. We’ve now completed Part A of the Bronze Arts Award! After half term we’ll be moving on to part B, which involves participating in different arts events and reflecting on the experiences we have.

Term 5 Week 6

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

We’ve been investigating the work of British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy this week. We watched a video showing examples of his work using natural materials and discussed our favourite pieces. We noticed that there were recurring themes in his art- we spotted that he really likes to make circles and spirals!

We then went outside and used different materials to form sculptures in a natural environment, in response to Goldsworthy’s work. We made some circles and spirals, and came up with some brilliant designs of our own!

Magenta & Violet Class

We were looking at Andy Goldsworthy’s work too. We discussed the different natural materials that he uses, and looked in particular at the way he places different elements very precisely to form the shape he is creating. We used Goldsworthy’s work as inspiration for some weaving using organic materials. The final results were really effective!

Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists worked with Plaster of Paris this week. We formed a wide, shallow coil pot using clay, then chose different natural materials to press into it. We mixed up some Plaster of Paris and poured it into the clay moulds before leaving it to set. Once the plaster had hardened, we peeled away the clay and were left with wonderfully delicate, detailed relief images of the natural forms we had chosen.

We’ve had a lovely term working in sculpture- looking forward to seeing you all after half term when we’ll be focusing on drawing!

Bronze Arts Award- Week 5

Indigo class spent last week reflecting on their art work so far, and recording their progress in their log books. This week, we were back to getting stuck in with some more sculpting! We looked at examples of work by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, then recorded some different poses on paper using stick figures. We then recreated our chosen pose using lolly sticks and glue guns, before covering the figures with strips of Modroc.
