Term 6 Week 3

Maroon & Turquoise Class

This week, our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists created two different kinds of sculptures using cardboard cylinders! We cut slots into toilet roll tubes and painted them bright colours before leaving them to dry. We then spent some time gluing strips of corrugated card into rings and attaching them together using glue guns. We created some interesting shapes using this method! After that, we slotted the dried toilet roll tubes together to form towers which were inspired by the buildings of Hundertwasser (see example).

Amber, Magenta & Violet Class

Our year 3 and 4 artists painted their ceramic tiles that we made last week, inspired by the work of Hilke Macintyre. We used fluorescent paint to make the features really stand out!

Jade & Emerald Class

Our year 5 and 6 artists used acrylic paint to decorate their ceramic shoes inspired by artist Diane Rojas. They looked fabulous!

Arts Award Week 6

Cyan Class

Our Explore Ats Award group had a visit from local ceramic artist Fiona Swepson this week! Fiona showed us some of her lovely teapots, cups and bowls that she made using different types of clay, and spoke to us about the processes and materials she uses. Fiona then showed us how to make Santa figures from clay! These were taken away to be fired.

You can see examples of Fiona’s work on her website, hopscotchpottery.com. We really enjoyed the workshop- a huge thank you to Fiona for coming to see us!

Term 5 Week 3

Maroon, Amber & Turquoise Class

This week our reception, year 1 and year 2 artists learnt some clay modelling techniques! We practised rolling spheres and cylinders, then had a go at pinch pots and coil pots. We learnt how to join two pieces of clay together successfully, and how to apply water to avoid the clay cracking. We then used some of these skills to create a tortoise!

Our year 5 and 6 artists were also busy with glue guns this week! Their challenge was to create a sculpture using only glue guns and crayons. The end results were really effective! We then practised some techniques for working with clay.

SUMMER HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

Last week we ran three days of workshops, which was a lovely way to launch classes in the studio! On Monday 22nd August there was a workshop based on Ellie’s picture book, Follow Me, and a ceramic painting class. We even had some two year old artists joining in with the creativity!

On Tuesday 23rd August it was the turn of Ellie’s picture book Copycat Bear, plus some fabulous printmaking.

Finally on Wednesday 24th August we designed some lovely birds based on Ellie’s first book, Birdsong, and then visiting artist Craig Pattrick showed us how to create our own plasticine characters.

You can see some of Craig’s work on his website, Craig Pattrick Illustration

A big thank you to all the young artists who participated in our summer workshops- we look forward to seeing you again some time!
